Peak fare rollback is driving workers off the rails
The Scottish Government has been accused of “derailing” its anti-poverty and green economic credentials as they press full steam ahead with its reintroduction of peak fares in Scotland.
Following a debate in the Scottish Parliament today, the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) has called the plans “a tax on workers” as the price of rail fares are set to almost double from the month.
The move comes after the Scottish Government’s own analysis had shown a marked increase in rail passenger numbers because of the pilot.
Commenting, STUC Deputy General Secretary Dave Moxham said:
“It’s inexplicable in the extreme quite why the Scottish Government are derailing even further their anti-poverty and green economic strategies with the reintroduction of peak fares.
“Fares in parts of our network are set to almost double with this stealth tax on workers who are doing nothing more than simply trying to get to their work. Making public transport more expensive and less accessible simply makes a mockery of any ambitions the government still has over net-zero and their commitment to sustainable travel.
“It’s clear that budgets are tight and government resource are finite but the Scottish Government are coming off the tracks with this short-sighted, regressive move that their own analysis said was working. They must extend this pilot even further to scrap for good the utter con that is peak fares.
