The STUC calls for an immediate ceasefire, to be followed by peace talks predicated on the recognition of the state of Palestine, withdrawal from all occupied territories, the dismantling of illegal settlements and equal rights for all residing within the state of Israel.
“The UK has called for a ceasefire but done nothing material to deliver it. The same or even worse can be said of the current US administration. And there is potentially even worse to come. Whilst there is some prospect that the new Trump administration’s ‘America First’ policy might limit direct US intervention in the region, Israel may well end up with an even freer hand than it was given by Biden. Since the invasion of Lebanon and the exchange of hostilities between Iran and Israel, the prospect, of a wholesale Middle East conflict has increased but very little effect on changing the approach of those Western governments who are so palpably out of step with the rest of the world.”
- ROZ FOYER, STUC GENERAL SECRETARY |
In its last delegation to Israel/Palestine over a decade ago, the STUC engaged with the PGFTU and with Histadrut, which acts as the Israeli trade union centre. Following the fact-finding mission, the STUC announced its support for Boycott Divestment and Sanctions. Following this decision Histadrut broke all ties with the STUC. There has been no contact since. The STUC believes that trade unions across the world should act for international justice and adhere to our slogan ‘An injury to one is an injury to all’. Thus, the STUC has no plans to re-engage with Histadrut until it is able to act meaningfully to urge restraint on the Israeli state and an end to the occupation and killing in Gaza.
