The Scottish Trades Union Congress recognizes the struggle of the Sahrawi people to assert their rights to self-determination and independence.
Since 1979, Western Sahara has been occupied and its people brutally repressed by the Moroccan state, who lay claim to the territory.
Many Sahrawi people live in refugee camps in Algeria, where some have been based their entire lives and have never known a permanent home base.
Several international human rights organisations have accused the Moroccan government of imposing a media blackout in the region by targeting protestors and journalists.
The Scottish trade union movement works in solidarity with the Sahrawi people through it’s affiliation to the Western Sahara Campaign. You can read more about the Western Sahara Campaign here.
