The STUC has historically stood with anti-apartheid activists in South Africa and campaigned throughout the 1980s for sanctions against South Africa. 

The Nelson Mandela Scottish Memorial Foundation has been established to create a statue of Nelson Mandela and to in Nelson Mandela Place Glasgow and to increase the knowledge and understanding of: 

• The life and legacy of Nelson Mandela; 

• the role of Scotland and Glasgow in the worldwide campaign for his release and against apartheid. 

The Nelson Mandela Scottish Memorial Foundation has launched a campaign to raise funds to create a statue of Nelson Mandela.
