Commenting, STUC General Secretary Roz Foyer said:

“Year after year, working people are feeling the cold cruelty of winter with less and less money to stave off the chill.

“Further energy prices rises only embed the alienation and desperate poverty felt by far too many working-class communities whilst simultaneously deepening the pockets of energy companies.

“Governments must be held to account for the inadequacies of their actions in failing to assist those who need it most this winter. We must see energy prices brought under control immediately through direct intervention. Long term, we cannot afford to ignore the obscenity that energy companies continue to rake in the profits at the expense of working people and politicians needs to make real their promises to bring down costs, energy prices and bills or else we risk further disharmony within our communities.

STUC calls for talks on council tax

Responding to a Scottish Labour Party call for cross party talks on council tax reform, commenting, STUC General Secretary Roz Foyer said:

“Scotland’s workers have had enough of politicians ducking the difficult decisions and kicking meaningful reform of our broken council tax system into the long grass. Thus, this is a welcome intervention from the Labour Party who, like all other political parties across Scotland with the exception of the Scottish Greens, have been far too glacial in calling for council tax reform.

Scotland’s largest trade union body have expressed their ‘alarm’ at the intervention of the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service Reform during an appearance at a Holyrood committee today, potentially signalling a rollback on the Scottish Government’s commitment to no compulsory redundancies.

In a letter addressed to Ivan McKee MSP, STUC General Secretary Roz Foyer noted Scotland’s workers would be “deeply alarmed” at the comments and that the workforce “cannot afford mixed messaging” as the Scottish Government continues their public service reform agenda.

Commenting in response to the Prime Minister’s speech to the Labour Party Conference, STUC General Secretary Roz Foyer said:

“It’s welcome to hear the Prime Minister speak assertively on breaking away with the failed, Thatcherite economics that have infected our politics for too long.

“The National Care Service set piece of his speech promises bold ambition but workers in Scotland have been here before. The Prime Minister would do well to learn the lessons of the Scottish Government’s failure to deliver a National Care Service here and its failure, thus far, to uprate the wages and conditions of Scotland’s vital social care workforce. Social care reform in England could carry significant funding consequentials to Scotland which we will examine in due course. However, we welcome any and all attempts to build a nationalised care service based on dignity, respect and one free from the scandal of private profit in care.

“The STUC are clear that retired workers and pensioners shouldn’t face detriment with any forthcoming changes to the triple lock but we recognise the urgent need to raise further revenue, especially if the Prime Minister is intent on following his National Care Service ambitions.

“It’s been a long time since a UK Prime Minister spoke with purpose on the ambitions and hopes of working-class communities across the UK. That can only be realised if workers have power and agency over their working lives. Whilst the full vision of the Prime Minister’s speech will take years to realise, if it ever is, the direction of travel he espoused towards public ownership of our utilities, democratic accountability and the empowerment of local communities is to be welcomed and trade unions will engage in that process for the benefit of workers.

Commenting on the Scottish Government’s public sector reform proposals for local governance, STUC General Secretary Roz Foyer said:

“Whilst the Scottish Government have the laudable ambition to strengthen local democracy, it’s absolutely for the birds to think the sheer scale of this local government reform can be achieved without the initial and substantial investment required to bring about change in our communities.

“There is an argument that community authorities can improve decision making but only if the funding exists to deliver these services. The Scottish Government must be clear that, in the short-term, this will cost money - not save it.
