Motion 106
Tories in Disguise will Attack Workers’ Rights
“That this Congress is appalled at the election of a Reform Councillor in West Lothian, and condemns the defection of former Tory Cabinet Ministers, MPs, an MSP, and councillors to another party that is even more extreme in its mission to divide communities by attacking migrants, cutting public services, and undermining workers’ rights.
“Congress condemns Reform and Nigel Farage’s attempt to portray themselves as the friend of working people despite Reform MPs voting against the UK Government’s Employment Rights Bill, which delivered improved rights for UK workers.
“Congress understands that Reform wants to:
- scrap employment laws that they claim hold back business, including by making it easier to hire and fire workers;
- attack Public Sector pensions;
- leave the European Convention on Human Rights and reform the Human Rights Act;
- replace the Equalities Act and scrap ‘Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion’ rules;
- change the definition of hate crime;
- maintain the option for businesses to employ workers on a zero hour contract; and
- cut taxes for big business and the rich.
“Congress calls on the General Council to:
- work with other organisations in common cause against Reform and the far-right;
- develop a strategy for educating and influencing workers on the risks to the economy and society from electing Reform and other far-right representatives;
- encourage all trades unions to provide materials to their members highlighting why voting Reform is such a bad idea; and
- call on all trade unionists and workers in Scotland to reject Reform.”
