Motion 115
Palestine and the BDS Movement
“That this Congress welcomes:
• the longstanding policy of the STUC in its solidarity with the Palestinian people;
• the statement by the STUC General Council calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and the STUC’s subsequent promotion of Palestine solidarity events, as well as providing speakers to these events, in light of the Israeli Government’s genocidal war in Gaza; and
• previous STUC policy in support of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, outlined in the BDS document published in 2009.
“Congress notes:
• parties to the Genocide Convention are obliged to act urgently to prevent genocide;
• the escalatory actions in the Red Sea led by the United States of America and allies, whose armed vessels and military operations have violently enforced the flow of resources to Israel, inhibiting efforts to halt the genocide; and
• these moves by the United States, UK, and allies, risks a serious escalation which would have repercussions the world over.
“Congress calls on the General Council to:
• form a working group of affiliates to promote and popularise the BDS movement throughout Scotland;
• update and disseminate STUC BDS resources;
• publicise to affiliates the work of Stop The War Coalition and the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign;
• oppose the UK Government’s involvement in the new U.S-led military alliance in the Red Sea; and
• campaign for the UK Government to recognise Palestine as an Independent State.”
