Take Me Home, Country Roads

I never thought I would be a trade unionist, just as I never thought I would be able to speak at EIS events or write this.

Recently, I’ve been thinking about my mum who left us many years ago. As I write this I remember all the ways in which we were so different. Now though I have come to realise that we were not so different after all.

She was resilient, a friend to many, sharp – witted, and loved nothing more than helping other people.

As I read through ‘Superpower’ this section stood out to me.

‘We have been built by other women super-heroes

who told us the truth when we needed to hear it

and stood beside us when we needed them most.’

And tell me the truth she certainly did, however much I didn’t want to hear it! However, in our final moments together she also gave me the strength to carry on and be the person she would be proud of.

I know now that I have arrived at the place where I was always meant to be…. albeit via some ‘country roads.’

Daughter, sister, mother, wife, friend, proud trade unionist.
