The STUC believes that the UK should not have normal trading relationships with countries which systematically breach international law and are guilty of war crimes.
The UK currently enacts some form of sanctions on the following countries:
Afghanistan; Belarus; Bosnia and Herzegovina; Central African Republic; Democratic People’s Republic of Korea; Congo; Guinea; Republic of Guinea-Bissau; Haiti; Iran; Iraq; Lebanon; Libya; Mali; Myanmar; Nicaragua; Russia; Somalia; South Sudan; Sudan; Syria; Venezuela; Yemen; Zimbabwe.
All these countries are also subject to UK arms embargo with the addition of:
Armenia; Azerbaijan; Belarus; China; Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
Why should Israel be added to this list?
STUC has called for a number of countries to be added to the trade restriction and embargo list. These include Saudi Arabia and Turkey each of whom are major forces in Middle East politics as well as having dubious human rights records. Thus, it is entirely consistent for us to seek similar sanctions on Israel.
