STUC on Labour Market statistics

Commenting on the latest official labour market statistics for Scotland published today which show a headline fall of 12,000 in unemployment, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said: “This significant fall in headline unemployment is as welcome as it is surprising. However, as always with labour market statistics, the overall picture is much more complex.

STUC - Nothing in the budget for 100,000 plus unemployed young Scots

Ahead of a demonstration to be led by young trade unionists outside Scottish Tory Party Conference in Troon this Saturday (24 March) Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary Grahame Smith said: “With unemployment amongst young people topping 100,000 we are facing a crisis which the Chancellor completely failed to address in the budget.

Responding to the Chancellor’s Budget statement, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said: “The UK economy is facing a crisis of high and rising unemployment and a precipitous fall in the living standards of ordinary workers and their families. Yet the Chancellor has responded with a ‘millionaires Budget’; one that provides tax cuts for the wealthiest individuals and corporations. It seems that the top rate of tax will no longer be determined by the interests of the nation but what society’s wealthiest are prepared to contribute to the common weal.

STUC on National Convention on Youth Employment

15th March 2012

At the National Convention on Youth Employment being held today in Dundee the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) will be pressing the Scottish and UK Governments for an end to unpaid employment arrangements such as workfare placements or internships and seeking assurances on the welfare and safety of young people currently engaged on such programmes.
