STUC initial Budget Reaction

Responding to the Chancellor’s Budget statement, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said: “The UK economy is facing a crisis of high and rising unemployment and a precipitous fall in the living standards of ordinary workers and their families. Yet the Chancellor has responded with a ‘millionaires Budget’; one that provides tax cuts for the wealthiest individuals and corporations. It seems that the top rate of tax will no longer be determined by the interests of the nation but what society’s wealthiest are prepared to contribute to the common weal.

STUC on National Convention on Youth Employment

15th March 2012

At the National Convention on Youth Employment being held today in Dundee the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) will be pressing the Scottish and UK Governments for an end to unpaid employment arrangements such as workfare placements or internships and seeking assurances on the welfare and safety of young people currently engaged on such programmes.

STUC Appalled at Latest Attack on UK Employment Rights

The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) has challenged the latest attack by the United Kingdom Government on the employment rights as the Con-Lib Coalition Government seek to increase the qualifying period for unfair dismissal from twelve months to two years and abolish the participation of lay members on employment tribunals.


STUC publishes Budget Submission 2012

Commenting as the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) published its 2012 Budget Submission to the Chancellor, Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary said: “We are publishing this submission on the eve of release of new labour market statistics for Scotland. Whatever happens tomorrow, all credible forecasters believe unemployment will remain high and above pre-recession levels through the course of this UK Parliament.
