With wages behind inflation, workers need a pay rise

Commenting on the unemployment and wage statistics released today by the ONS, Grahame Smith, General Secretary of the Scottish Trades Union Congress, said:

Wages still falling despite record low unemployment rates

Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary Grahame Smith says: “With unemployment at record lows, you would expect wages to rise as workers grain greater bargaining power in the labour market. This clearly is not the case as real average weekly earnings have fallen across the UK by 0.5% in the 3 months to June 2017. Serious questions about the health of our labour market continue, which underlines the economic illiteracy of Government policies that hold down pay in the current economic context.

STUC welcomes landmark Employment tribunal fees decision; congratulates Unison on key victory

Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary Grahame Smith said: “This landmark victory will ensure that access to employment justice is returned to thousands of workers and that those who were forced to pay for cases will now be reimbursed. It is a disgrace that many, many other workers have been denied justice over the past four years because fees dissuaded them from taking cases.
