Everyday Skills are the Way Forward for Trade Unions

It is estimated that over one million adults in Scotland lack basic digital skills, despite various initiatives to stimulate digital participation and develop digital skills*. Additionally, official statistics in the United Kingdom show that 10% of the population have dyslexia**. Trade Unions, and in particular Union Learning Reps, are uniquely placed to tackle these issues in the workplace, and are able to provide on-site support to workplace learners.

Commenting on the latest set of official labour market statistics for Scotland published today, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said: “It is always dangerous to read too much into one set of ONS figures but today’s report does provide some cause for sober reflection. The big fall in unemployment witnessed in last month’s figures hasn’t been sustained with the Scottish rate now back to over 3% above its trough of summer 2008.

STUC at the Scottish Parliament this week

As MSPs come back to Parliament this week, there will be a number of opportunities to meet with trade union representatives from different sectors and professions across Scotland. The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) ‘Trade Union Week at the Scottish Parliament’ allows MSPs to meet with constituents from local workplaces, but also shines a spotlight on the valuable contribution that trade unions make to civic society and to the economy.

STUC to publish the second ‘A Just Scotland Report’ - Early excerpts on currency union

The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) will publish its second ‘A Just Scotland Report’ on Thursday 20th February. In the context of the anticipated speech by George Osborne in which it is suggested he will rule out any prospect of a formal currency union with an independent Scotland, the STUC is releasing early excerpts from the report dealing with this issue.
