Commenting after the Office for National Statistics (ONS) had published the latest set of labour market statistics for Scotland, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said:

STUC releases proposals for enhanced devolution

Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary Grahame Smith said: “Through its ’A Just Scotland’ initiative, STUC continues to consider the key issues relating to the independence referendum. Whilst we have not come to a definitive view on recommending a Yes or No vote, it is increasingly clear that there is a strong case and strong public support for building on the current status quo (including the measures contained within the 2012 Scotland Act). Many of our members continue to support independence in preference to any other option and we intend to continue to reflect these views alongside making proposals for enhanced devolution in the case that the vote is for ‘No’ in September.

A long way to go until full labour market recovery argues STUC in 2014 Budget Submission

Speaking as the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) published its 2014 Budget Submission, Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary said: “Despite much stronger than anticipated GDP growth over the past year, many Scottish workers will struggle to reconcile talk of strong economic recovery with their day to day experience of the labour market.

STUC calls for urgent review of Fatal Accident Inquiries after North Sea tragedy findings

Following the publication of the findings from the Fatal Accident Inquiry into the deaths of 16 men in the Miller Helicopter tragedy in the North Sea on 1st April 2009 the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) has again called on the Scottish Government to review the Fatal Accident Inquiry system.

Bob Crow

Reacting to the news of the death of Bob Crow, leader of the Rail Union, RMT, Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary said: “Everyone at STUC is deeply saddened by the passing of Bob Crow. Since 2002, Bob led his union with courage and distinction and will be greatly missed, not just by his own members but by trade unionists across Scotland and the whole of Britain.
