Following the release of the annual report on workplace injury and ill-health by the Health and Safety Executive the STUC has called for the Government to reverse it attacks on the HSE and provide resources for the enforcement agency to do its work without Government interference. Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary said “It is clear from these statistics that the 40% funding cuts imposed by the coalition Government on HSE along with their unwarranted ideological attacks on workplace health and safety by the Government and certain sections of the media are having an impact in Scotland.

Speaking at the STUC’s Decent Work, Dignified Lives conference after the First Minister had announced the establishment of a Fair Work Convention, Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary said: “The STUC enthusiastically welcomes the First Minister’s announcement today. The establishment of a Scottish Fair Work Convention, a key recommendation of the Working Together Review, signals a new approach to fair pay and industrial relations in Scotland. The approach stands in stark contrast to the policies of the UK Government.

STUC on Scottish Government Budget

Responding to the Scottish Government Budget today Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary, Grahame Smith, said “Today’s budget provides little relief for hard pressed public service workers who have seen their real terms income falling by thousands of pounds in recent years. STUC reiterates its support for the continuing Living Wage commitments within Public Sector pay policy but is very concerned about the squeeze on those on median pay of a little over £21,000 per year which is getting more and more painful every year. These real terms wage cuts are a disaster for our members and a disaster for the Scottish economy which desperately needs a boost in demand.
