STUC Women’s Committee Marks UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

To mark the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women today (Tuesday 25 November) the STUC women’s Committee took part in events in the campaign to eliminate the violence and abuse faced by women and girls on a daily basis throughout the world. As part of the UN 16 Days of Action for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, RMT and UNITE members campaigned in Glasgow’s Central Station with the distribution of white ribbons and campaign leaflets highlighting the issues, and the Violence Against Women 365 poster exhibition, part of which is on display in the London Road headquarters of Community Safety Glasgow, opened.

STUC comment as report confirms falling real wages

Commenting following publication of the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings 2014 by the Office for National Statistics, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary, said: “Today’s report confirms that the median wage in Scotland fell yet again in real terms during the year to April 2014. If wages had kept pace with CPI inflation since 2009, the median worker in Scotland would now be earning £1705 more per year.

STUC welcome’s Glasgow City Council decision on Scottish Defence League

The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) today welcomed Glasgow City Council’s statement that the Scottish Defence League (SDL) will not receive permission to march on the 29th November. The STUC in association with the Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights (CRER) has organised its annual St Andrew’s Day Anti-Racism March and Rally for this date, under the banner of ‘A future free from Racism’.
