Dodgy deal lacks credibility and stability

Speaking after the announcement that Theresa May had struck a deal with the DUP to maintain power, STUC General Secretary Grahame Smith said “Theresa May spent much of the election campaign attacking the so-called coalition of chaos. But it is her promise to deliver stability which is now in tatters.

In response to the General Election result, Grahame Smith, General Secretary of the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) said: “Theresa May’s strategy in calling a snap election has spectacularly backfired. In just a few weeks, her arrogance and weak leadership has lost the Tory Party its Parliamentary majority, its austerity agenda has been soundly rejected, as has its systematic dismantling of our public services and its attacks on unions and on workers’ rights. Its hard Brexit strategy is in tatters. Her credibility is shot and she should go now

Ongoing Industrial Action at the EHRC

The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) is concerned that eight staff at the Equality and Human Rights Commission were dismissed by email while taking industrial action around a restructure. Following campaigning by recognised unions in the EHRC, these staff were reinstated but are still prevented from attending work and are still facing redundancy at the end of their notice period. This action has been taken despite the existence of over 30 vacancies at the EHRC, and despite the EHRC having access to the wider Civil Service Vacancy Scheme.

Communities across Scotland mark International Workers’ Memorial Day

28th April 2017

Throughout Scotland communities will gather on Friday 28th April to remember those killed or who have suffered injury at work. International Workers’ Memorial Day provides an opportunity for trade unions to reinforce their commitment to campaigning for safer and healthier workplaces where workers are protected from harm and treated with fairness, dignity and respect.

STUC elects its first Black President

26th April 2017

At the 120th Congress in Aviemore the STUC elected Satnam Ner from Prospect trade union as President. Satnam Ner, a Radiochemistry Manager at Babcock International Group and a long serving member of the STUC Black Workers’ Committee and the General Council, will be the first Black President of the STUC.
