The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) has announced that the recipient of this year’s health and safety award is Pauline Russell, a committed GMB member, Senior Health and Safety Representative and Convenor at the Diageo Bottling Plant at Leven in Fife.
The plant has undergone significant modernisation and expansion in recent years and Pauline has ensured that the GMB health and safety structures reflect the needs of her members.
This has led to the GMB now having 35 trained health and safety representatives with a further 7 awaiting training, most have been recruited by Pauline and she is always on the lookout for more to ensure the union have adequate resources to meet the demands posed by round the clock shift working.

“Pauline has clearly demonstrated the difference that trade union health and safety representatives make in the workplace, she has worked tirelessly to retain and recruit health and safety representatives for the GMB as well as working with colleagues, management.
“ Her willingness to provide advice to colleagues and always available to help less experienced resolve problems in the workplace sometimes eating into her own time to help colleagues find a resolution to potentially serious workplace health and safety issues.”
