Commenting on today’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures which confirm that the recession deepened in the second quarter of 2012, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said:
“These figures, significantly worse than even the most pessimistic forecast, are a disaster for the Chancellor who is now presiding over a smaller economy than when he took office.
“This woeful performance is the inevitable outcome of an austerity programme based on wildly inaccurate analysis of current economic conditions. The Coalition’s failure has been entirely predictable and indeed was predicted by the STUC and many others.
“If this prolonged slump is not to leave a legacy worse than anything Scotland experienced in the recent past, urgent action is needed to stimulate demand. There is no shortage of coherent solutions.
“On the 20 October the STUC will build on growing public anger over the Coalition’s economic mismanagement by leading a major public demonstration on the streets of Glasgow. Together with the TUC’s sister demonstration in London, this will send another strong message to the Government that people will no longer tolerate this economic madness”.
