Ahead of a demonstration to be led by young trade unionists outside Scottish Tory Party Conference in Troon this Saturday (24 March) Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary Grahame Smith said:
“With unemployment amongst young people topping 100,000 we are facing a crisis which the Chancellor completely failed to address in the budget.
“Aside from his failure to introduce any meaningful measures to boost growth through increasing demand in the economy, the Chancellor has complacently decided to stick with cut-price, poorly-targeted and unpaid work experience schemes rather than proposing bold strategies to avert another lost generation.
“Over 22,000 young people have now been unemployed in Scotland for over 12 months. We need a guarantee of paid work or training for any youngster who has been out of work for at least six months and a new youth credit should be offered to all 16 to 24-year-olds to boost training, work placements and the chance of getting a better job.”
