STUC on the Pensions Dispute and the Autumn Statement

November 29th 2011

Responding to comments made by the Chancellor in announcing his Autumn Statement, Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary said:

“It is outrageous to blame unions for ‘damaging the economy’ when his own statement outlines the full extent of the Coalition’s economic mismanagement.

“The pensions grab is just another component, along with real terms cuts wages, benefits and tax credits, of a strategy that seeks to force ordinary workers to carry the costs of an economic crisis that was not of their making.

“At some point, the penny will eventually drop that a demand crisis cannot be solved by continually undermining the purchasing power of workers”.
