The 2010 STUC Women's Conference, held 1-2 November 2010 in the Concert Hall, Perth has carried an emergency motion moved by Natasha Gerson of Equity for the Women’s Committee calling for additional support from trade unions and their members for the Pakistan Flood Disaster Appeal.
“Pakistan Flood Disaster Appeal”
“That this Conference notes that in late October 2010, three months after floods devastated Pakistan, cases of disease are increasing and in the worst-hit region, the southern province of Sindh, large areas remain underwater.
“Over 20 million people have been affected by the floods and 1.9 million houses have been damaged or destroyed.
“The international aid agency, Oxfam, has warned that funds for the UN flood appeal are drying up and threatening the aid and reconstruction effort.
“Conference is very concerned to learn that as winter approaches, seven million people are still without adequate shelter. Conference notes the particular impact on women with children and pregnant women, who are desperately in need of winter clothing, blankets, medical supplies, sanitary products and other essentials.
“Conference, therefore, agrees to ask all delegates to return to their own organisations, ask for contributions from members and urges them to work with Oxfam and other relevant organisations to deliver this much needed help as soon as possible.
“Conference also asks the STUC Women’s Committee to bring this to the attention of all affiliates, as a matter of urgency, following Conference.”
