STUC call for urgent action on childcare in Scotland

September 29th 2010

The Scottish Government today (29th September) published its annual Pre-School and Childcare statistics. Whilst there is a slight increase in nursery places, the figures show a decline in playgroups, in out of school clubs, crèches, and children and family centres.

Elaine Dougall, Chair of the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) Women’s Committee, said

“All family members benefit from good quality childcare, and working parents need the security of reliable and flexible provision. We are very concerned about the reduction in a range of services. This means women in particular may not be able to continue in employment – and jobs are being lost in the childcare sector itself.”

Members of the STUC Women’s Committee will be in Edinburgh at the Scottish Parliament, tomorrow (30th September) to discuss their concerns with MSPs.
