Commenting on the SBC’s report published today, ‘Platform for Success’, Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary said:
“The STUC welcomes this report and thanks the Commission for its open and participative approach in gathering evidence over the past year.
“The report recognises that levels of television production have been in steep decline and that halting this decline and growing the sector will bring substantial economic and employment benefits to Scotland. It also recognises that democracy in Scotland is currently ill-served due to a lack of accurate and relevant news coverage.
“The STUC believes the Commission is correct to stop short of recommending the full devolution of broadcasting powers and to argue instead for the Scottish Parliament to take an active role in considering the broadcasting industry and services audiences in Scotland receive.
“The STUC will over the coming weeks work with the broadcasting trade unions to consider the full range of the Commission’s recommendations.”
