Commenting on the Scottish Government’s legislative programme, Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary said:
“The STUC looks forward to discussing the legislative programme with Ministers and in particular how Scottish workplaces can contribute to the Scottish Government’s ambitious targets on climate change.
“The STUC continues to strongly oppose the Government’s plans for a Local Income Tax. The LIT represents poor economics, diminishes democracy and accountability and allows those living off unearned income to avoid contributing to the delivery of local services. Indeed, removing the property-based component will only exacerbate the already prodigious levels of tax avoidance in the taxation system”.
“The STUC are disappointed that the Scottish Government has failed to take this opportunity to include any proposals to bring forward changes in the Scots Common Law of Culpable homicide to ensure that it applies across all of Scottish society irrespective of where involuntary killing occur be it on the high street, as a result of a road traffic accident or in the workplace.
