STUC President Phil McGarry and First Minister Alex Salmond will today sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) committing the STUC and the Scottish Government to work in partnership across a wide range of public policy issues.
Mr McGarry said:
“The Memorandum of Understanding builds on our relationship with the Scottish Government developed during the last administration. The MoU sets out how the STUC and the Scottish Government work together, what we expect from each other and what we have to offer each other in terms of better development and implementation of policy. “It does not mean that we will always agree. The STUC had its disagreements with the previous Government and will inevitably encounter areas of disagreement with its successor. However, the MoU helps to build and maintain a relationship that is sufficiently mature to enable us to discuss our differences and resolve them where possible. “The MoU benefits policy development and implementation by ensuring that the Government has access to the representative views, knowledge, expertise and experience of trade unionists as both workers and citizens, democratically determined through structures underpinned by equal opportunities principles. “I am delighted to sign the agreement on behalf of the STUC and look forward to positive results from its implementation”.
Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary added:
“The STUC hopes to work with Government to build on our constructive bilateral relationship to create a wider and more extensive social partnership for Scotland”.
