THE JIMMY BRANDON CENTRE

The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) in conjunction with the Community Union are hosting a one day seminar on the subject of Migrant workers in Lanarkshire. The event will be held in the Jimmy Brandon learning centre Hamilton Road Motherwell.
Throughout its history Lanarkshire has experienced flows of migrant workers including Italians, Asian, Irish, Lithuanians and more recently Congolese and Polish workers all whom have came to Lanarkshire to build a better life for themselves and their families. The seminar will examine the issues migrant workers face and will ask how the local trade union movement can organise and support migrant workers in order to build unity in the workplace and wider community.
STUC Development Officer John Slaven said “The purpose of the seminar is to provide local trade unionists in Lanarkshire with an insight into the challenges faced by migrant workers and to address the particular support required by migrant workers from the trade union movement to assist integration into the workplace and society.”
