Commenting on the Scottish Elections, Scottish TUC General Secretary Grahame Smith said:
“Although at this stage the outcome of the election is too close to call, one thing is clear. The significance of the enormous number of spoiled ballot papers cannot be ignored. For whatever reasons, it appears that up to one hundred of thousand electors have effectively been disenfranchised.
"In such a close election this will undoubtedly have an impact on the result. While I wouldn’t wish to suggest that the outcome, whatever it turns out to be, will be invalid, any Party that hopes to lead the next Scottish Executive must take this into account when considering the strength of its mandate.
“Scotland needs stable Government in the period ahead. If that requires greater co-operation within the Parliament and between the Parliament and the people, so be it. This is what matters to those whose votes have been counted as well as to those whose votes have been disallowed.”
