Responding to the news of an almost 1%, or 6,000 increase in union membership in Scotland STUC General Secretary Grahame Smith said:
“This is excellent for Scottish trade unions and confirms that we are continuing to turn the tide.
“It is particularly pleasing that this proportional increase has taken place at the same time as significant increases in employment in Scotland. Much of this increase in Scottish trade union membership has taken place in areas such as services which are not traditionally fertile ground for union recruitment. These latest figures provide welcome evidence that the organising and recruitment campaigns of our affiliates are bearing fruit.
“In a year where public sector employment has barely risen, these union membership figures confirm that public sector workers are increasingly turning to the collective voice of their unions.
“During the next period the Scottish trade unions will be reaching out to a wide range of vulnerable workers such as migrant workers, agency workers and part-time workers and joining with community groups and campaigning organisations to underline the message that trade union membership is as vital as it ever has been.”
