The STUC is giving the ACTSA Scotland/Community HEART Book and £1 Appeal a very special profile at this year’s annual Congress currently being held in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, as a very practical and simple demonstration of solidarity with Southern Africa.
ACTSA Scotland (Action for South Africa) is sending a container load of books from the STUC Annual Congress in Glasgow for distribution to school and community libraries throughout the Eastern Cape region of South Africa which has historical twinning links with Scotland.
The container contains books donated over many months by trade union members and the public throughout Scotland. Included in this massive collection are 1000 Harry Potter books donated by JK Rowling and books from Alexander McCall Smith. The container load will be completed by more than 300 books brought by delegates to the STUC Congress including pre-reading material easy readers, story books, factual books, and all kinds of dictionaries and encyclopaedias. Visitors to Congress have also donated books including First Minister Jack McConnell.
ACTSA Scotland Chair, Brian Filling said “This act of solidarity isn’t just symbolic, it demonstrates that people in Scotland, particularly trade unionists, understand the devastation caused by the evils of apartheid. It also shows their understanding of the need for British people to assist the South African people to overcome that legacy.
