Scots workers are more likely to undertake learning because of their current level of qualification and the involvement of a trade union in learning.
Evidence gathered in a new ground breaking report commissioned by the Scottish TUC indicates that an estimated 400,000 people who work in a unionised workplace intend to undertake learning, three quarters of whom plan to do so within the next 2-3 years. Union Learning Representatives across Scotland are confident that the demand for union-led learning is increasing and with sufficient resources, they could deliver significantly higher numbers of learners in the workplace.
The report is the first of its kind in Scotland and the United Kingdom: a formal statistical analysis of demand for union-led learning.
STUC Skills & Lifelong Learning Team Manager Sylvia O’Grady said:
“Anecdotal evidence from Union Learning Representatives and members who are already involved in learning has suggested for some time that that there is an untapped demand for learning in the workplace.
“This research gives us sound evidence to confirm the many positive reports we receive on the effect of union-led learning activity in the workplace and corroborates what we already know about the added value union involvement brings to the table.”
