STUC on the occupation of Simclar, Kilwinning
Commenting on the occupation of the Simclar plant in Kilwinning by workers sacked on Monday STUC General Secretary, Grahame Smith, said:
“The anger of the Simclar workers is entirely understandable. They have been treated disgracefully by an owner who is experienced in closing plants but not in dealing with an organised workforce.
“The redundancies were perpetrated with scant regard for the workers involved or the redundancy legislation designed to protect them. It is imperative that the administrators do not allow the workers to be overlooked if the asset stripping resumes.
“All trade unions recognise that redundancies happen. When this is the case, reasonable people understand there is due process to follow. Workers must be paid what they’re due.
“Instead of wasting time lecturing politicians for doing what they’re paid to do - representing the interests of their constituents – Simclar’s owners would better spend their time examining the defects in their antiquated business model.
“Trade unions are keenly aware of the challenges globalisation poses for Scottish manufacturing industry. As all respected commentators recognise, these challenges cannot be met by an agenda that seeks to compete with emerging economies on cost alone. It is Mr Russell who clearly doesn’t want to understand the nature of global competition”.
