STUC General Secretary's comment on General Election
Commenting on the outcome of yesterday's General Election, STUC General Secretary Bill Speirs said:
"I am pleased that Michael Howard's attempts to play to people's worst instincts in relation to race and migration have dismally failed."
"I welcome that Tony Blair, in his speech after winning his seat, recognised that the people wanted to keep a Labour Government, but at the same time send a message that they were unhappy with aspects of how it has been behaving. "
"Mr Blair's attitude was more thoughtful than usual. I hope that he may now be prepared to agree to meet the STUC, and discuss how the trade union movement in Scotland can work with the UK Government in the interests of working people, as we have been working with Jack McConnell and the Scottish Executive."
"If Mr Blair still isn't prepared to meet us, I am sure his successor will."
