NEWS RELEASE EMBARGOED UNTIL MIDNIGHT FRIDAY 25 JULY 2003
STUC YOUTH CONFERENCE DEBATE YOUTH CRIME POLICY WITH SCOTTISH EXECUTIVE'S JUSTICE MINISTER ON SATURDAY 26 JULY 2003
The STUC Youth Conference will today welcome the Scottish Executive's Justice Minister, Cathy Jamieson MSP, to their Conference and debate the Executive's policy in relation to youth crime with her.
Pauline Minnery, Chair of the Youth Committee, and member of the STUC General Council, said:
"We are very pleased to have the Justice Minister joining us today to discuss the Executive's policy on youth crime and welcome the priority they are giving to this issue over which there is growing public concern.
"However, we will be putting some tough questions to the Minister, as we recognise that the majority of victims of youth crime are other young people and we are concerned that some of the Executive's proposals, like curfews, discriminate against young people just because of their age."
All members of the press are welcome to attend the Conference.
Note to Editors: The Conference takes place at on Saturday/Sunday 26/27 July 2003 in the STUC Centre, 333 Woodlands Road, Glasgow G3 6NG.
