NEWS RELEASE
"TRINITY MIRROR IS PUTTING SCOTLAND'S TOP PAPERS AT RISK", SAYS STUC
Commenting on the news that GPMU members at the "Daily Record" and "Sunday Mail" are to ballot for industrial action over the decision of the papers' owner, Trinity Mirror, to transfer a range of jobs to locations in England, including Canary Wharf, STUC General Secretary, Bill Speirs, said:
"I find it stunning that, at a time when the "Record" and "Sunday Mail" are battling to maintain their position as Scotland's premier daily and Sunday papers, they should be moving key activities out of Scotland.
"If Rupert Murdoch had devised a strategy to replace the "Record" with the "Sun" as the "real Scottish paper", he could not have come up with a better scheme than this.
"Trinity Mirror should reverse their plans immediately, and seriously engage with the "Record" and "Sunday Mail" workforce on how the papers can be improved, and their circulation increased.
"If they go down the road of shifting jobs South in order to boost fat-cat profits, there is a real chance that the readers of the papers will vote with their wallets and stop buying."
