Commenting on publication of the latest official labour market statistics for Scotland, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said:
“With a significant increase in unemployment and a small fall in employment, today’s statistics ostensibly provide more evidence that the recovery in the Scottish labour market is stalling.
“However, digging below the headlines reveals that the rise in unemployment was almost exclusively down to women moving from economic inactivity into unemployment. The strength of the labour market will be revealed by the pace at which these people newly identified as unemployed now move into quality, sustainable employment.
“The reasons for falling inactivity in Scotland are not immediately obvious but the STUC believes that falling household incomes are a significant factor”.
