STUC Comment on Spring UK Budget

Commenting on the Spring Budget, STUC General Secretary Roz Foyer said:

"The Chancellor has lost control of the economy with a recession, dismal predictions for future growth and soaring interest rates.

“Cutting public spending and cutting taxes that mainly benefit the rich will only make that worse and signals the further destruction of our public services. The richest quarter of workers benefit 14 times more than the poorest quarter from the National Insurance cut.

“As the Chancellor talks about his ‘public sector productivity plan’, workers across the country hold their breath for the inevitable onslaught of cuts to come. His spending plans represent a real-terms cut to non-protected areas and signals he is sacrificing public services - and our fine public sector workers - at the altar as he throws everything at the Tory base ahead of the election.

“Whilst consequentials for Scotland require further analysis, what is abundantly clear is this will barely touch the sides after 14 years of unrelenting Tory austerity.

“This isn’t a budget for long-term growth; this was an electioneering budget for the Tories and their support alone. Scotland’s workers should remember this callous approach to their pay packets and public services at the ballot box come the election.”
