Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary Grahame Smith said:
“We send out solidarity to workers and their families across Europe who are protesting against austerity this May Day. On Saturday 4th Scotland will see May Day marches in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Irvine and on Sunday thousands will gather in Glasgow.
“Clearly the crises in countries such as Greece and Spain have brought about protest on an almost unprecedented scale with workers and communities coming together to reject the austerity measures which are ripping apart their communities and destroying the prospects for growth.
“Closer to home the frequency and scale of protest is also on the increase. Over the past six months Glasgow has seen 15,000 gather for STUC’s ‘A Future That Works’ demonstration and thousands more have gathered to protest over issues such as the Bedroom Tax and Trident.
“Increasingly people are coming together to say ‘enough is enough’ and there is every possibility that protest will intensify in the months to come.”
