STUC Highlights employment concerns at Annual Congress

Speaking prior to the publication of the Coalition report card ‘Yes, the time has come to say ‘we told you so’ highlighting 6 economic claims which the Coalition Government got wrong’. Grahame Smith Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said

"Despite last week's better news on headline ILO unemployment, the Scottish labour market is nowhere near recovering pre-recession employment levels.

"This STUC report highlights three areas of particular concern: long-term youth unemployment, the rapid increase over the last year in unemployment amongst women and the scarcity of secure, permanent full-time jobs.

"Blame lies overwhelmingly with the UK Government whose failed economic strategy is damaging far too many lives and leaving a legacy that will burden the economy with massive costs for years to come. If they are indeed serious about tackling youth unemployment, then nothing less than a wholesale revisiting of economic strategy is required.

"The Scottish Government must continue to do all it can to support workless young people through the provision of quality training opportunities. And it must begin to address the deteriorating position of women by adopting a strategy similar to its approach to youth unemployment".
