Commenting on the First Minister’s presentation to Parliament of the Scottish Government’s programme for Scotland 2011-2012, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said:

“In delivering this speech, the First Minister set out beautifully the reasons why the UK Government’s approach is so irresponsible and why public investment has to be the mechanism through which sustainable recovery is achieved. His referencing of Joseph Stiglitz and Nouriel Roubini, among the few economists to have emerged from the financial crisis with enhanced reputations, is immensely encouraging.

“However, the STUC finds today’s speech difficult to reconcile with the economics expressed in the recent paper on corporation tax and therefore we look forward with great interest to the forthcoming economic strategy ‘refresh’ and Budget proposals. It is essential that a coherent and progressive approach to achieving broadly based prosperity emerges from both.

“The STUC broadly welcomes the Scottish Government’s approach to implementing the Christie Commission recommendations and we look forward to working with Ministers on this and other areas of the legislative programme”.
