STUC on labour market statistics

June 15th 2011

Commenting on official labour market statistics for Scotland released today, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trade Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said:

“We are deeply concerned that on the last month, the claimant count in Scotland increased by a further 1,200 and that the number of women JSA claimants has increased by 20% over the past year.

“The fall in ILO unemployment is to be welcomed, but much of this recovery is weak and driven by increases in part-time employment for those who actually want, and need, a full-time job. Manufacturing employment is continuing to fall and we have yet to see the full impact of cuts in public service jobs and an anticipated slowdown in the construction sector.

“The sad fact is that we are nowhere near where we should be at this point of a so-called recovery and the UK coalition Government must act now to change its ideology driven austerity measures.”
