The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) has welcomed the ruling from the Court of Session rejecting the latest attempts from the insurance industry to deny compensation for thousands of workers exposed to asbestos and who subsequently contracted pleural plaques.

Grahame Smith STUC General Secretary said

“We welcome this judgement and would sincerely hope that the insurance industry will now accept that the introduction of this legislation was entirely within the competence of the Scottish Parliament and now begin to pay compensation to those suffering from pleural plaques.

“It is deeply disappointing that insurers, having accepted the employers business and their insurance premiums continue to challenge any efforts to compensate workers suffering asbestos related conditions. Sufferers of pleural plaques suffer years of anxiety and distress and we believe should always have been compensated for this suffering.

“The STUC would like to commend the efforts all the asbestos groups in challenging the unfair and immoral actions of the insurers and in particular we would like to thank, Frank Maguire, Senior Partner at Thompsons Scotland for his support to the groups and asbestos sufferers across Scotland.
