Commenting on the publication of official labour market statistics which show a rise in employment, a fall in ILO unemployment and small rise in the claimant count, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said:
“Any fall in unemployment is welcome, particularly at this time of year but there is nothing in these statistics or current data in general to suggest that the Scottish labour market will recover in 2011. Indeed, current forecasts for low growth imply high unemployment well into 2012 as spending cuts and falling real wages continue to depress domestic demand.
“The outlook for those Scottish people about to experience their second of third Christmas on the dole remains very bleak indeed”.
