STUC on Scottish Growth Statistics

July 21st 2010

Commenting on the release of official GDP statistics confirming that the Scottish economy did not grow in Q1 2010, Stephen Boyd, STUC Assistant Secretary said:

“These statistics provide further proof, if any was needed, that recovery from the longest and deepest recession in modern times will be a prolonged and extremely difficult process.

“Unemployment in Scotland is continuing to rise and Bank of England reports published over the last couple of days have confirmed tight credit conditions, weak consumer spending and stagnant wages.

“The immediate and deep public spending cuts announced in the Chancellor’s emergency budget statement are bound to worsen an already dire economic situation and needlessly condemn thousands of Scottish citizens to a lengthy period of unemployment”.
