STUC on Article 50

March 29th 2017

Responding to the triggering of Article 50, Grahame Smith Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said:

“The STUC welcomes the solidarity of trade unions across Europe who have declared that they are ready to fight for workers’ rights and a fair deal for EU citizens in the UK and UK citizens in the EU. The UK cannot become a low tax, low regulation society, exploiting its own workforce and undercutting efforts to raise standards across Europe. Membership of the single market and customs union remains the best option for the UK economy going forward, but this needs to come with an acceptance of the rules and social protections that aim to create a level playing field.

“The STUC supports the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) statement, which represents the views of trade unions in Europe and in the UK, and will continue to work with trade unions across Europe to influence the negotiations and ensure a good deal for working people.”
