The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) Annual St Andrew’s Day March and Rally takes place Saturday 26th November. The event was organised by the STUC Black Workers’ Committee and this year has the theme ‘No Racism: Protecting Rights, Defending Communities’
Speaking ahead of the March and Rally, Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary said:
“There has never been a more important time to show our support for equality and to reject racism. We are facing an unprecedented challenge from the right, with racist views permeating the mainstream in such a way as we have not seen in a generation.
“All around we see challenges to liberty and equality, with systemic attacks on employment rights, threats to human rights, question marks around the continuing status of migrant workers and rising hate crime. The UK Government now seem increasingly prepared to sacrifice our economic wellbeing to an anti-immigration rhetoric. The outlook for ordinary workers, in these conditions, looks precarious at best.
“We cannot allow the economic pain that is likely to come from Brexit to be used to increase racial tensions, or to scapegoat migrant workers. It is incumbent on all of us to stand firm against racism and to defend our rights for the benefit of everyone in Scotland”
