STUC on Scottish election results

May 6th 2016

STUC General Secretary Grahame Smith said:

“The STUC congratulates Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP on its election victory. Whilst the SNP has fallen short of an overall majority and the Tories have strengthened their position, there remains a strong majority for progressive policies in the Parliament.

“It is generally agreed that this is the most important period yet for the Scottish Parliament and the next Government will wield new powers on tax, welfare and employment. There are significant challenges in health and education and successive parliaments have yet to adequately address the poverty and inequality which scars our communities.

“Now is the time to be bold and to look across the Parliament and seek to build consensus for radical policies, using all of the powers at the Government’s disposal.

“The STUC will continue to represent the interests of our members, and workers more generally, holding the Government to its promises, but also continuing to work with it constructively on our shared priorities.”
