STUC Youth Committee Statement on the result of the Scottish independence referendum

September 19th 2014

Yesterday Scotland decided its future in the referendum on Scottish Independence. Scotland's Young People, Young Workers and Young Trade Unionists were very much part of this, many of whom went out and voted for the first time.

The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) Youth Committee welcomes the large turnout and level of engagement in politics and Scotland's future especially from young people. We will continue to ensure that Scotland's youth remains central in taking Scotland forward and we look forward to participating in discussions on new powers for the Scottish Parliament.

However, they should be powers with a purpose. The purpose of making Scotland a socially just and successful country where young people and all Scottish citizens can work together for a more equal society.

The STUC Youth Committee calls upon politicians from across the United Kingdom to recognise the confidence, maturity, engagement and activity of Scotland's young people, young workers and young trade unionists by now ensuring that all 16 and 17 year olds are given the vote for all elections and referendums in the future. We have shown that we are responsible, able and willing to lead and decide our own futures.
