Responding to today’s report on the public sector workforce, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary Grahame Smith said:
“It comes as no surprise to us that Audit Scotland is reporting the loss of over 26,000 whole time equivalent jobs in Scotland, in reality the number of actual people affected is far higher. Neither is it a surprise that local government is particularly badly affected.
“It is of particular concern that fewer young people are being employed in the public sector. This has major implications for future capacity and skills in the public sector and must be addressed as a matter of urgency.
“It is entirely clear that the root cause of the problem is the continued austerity policies of the UK Government, but as services continue to suffer as jobs are cut back, the case for ending the Council Tax Freeze becomes ever more urgent”.
