Speaking as members of the Communication Worker Union (CWU) hold events in Dundee and Glasgow (Wednesday 16 January) to highlight the ongoing exploitation of agency workers, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said:
“The STUC strongly supports the CWU’s day of action. It is as predictable as it is disgraceful that employers have so quickly ferreted out loopholes in the 2011 legislation to avoid paying fair wages to hardworking employees already struggling with the insecurities of temporary employment.
“In the interests of fairness and economic security, practices such as ‘Pay Between Assignment’ contracts must end now. Government must tighten the legislation recognising that, if work is to pay, low wage employees need decent levels of protection from exploitative employers and agencies”.
